Right Lighting for Each Room

How to Choose the Right Lighting for Each Room in Your Home

Good home lighting starts with matching light to how you use each room. When a room feels dim or harsh, the cause is often a single overhead doing all the work.

Think in layers before you shop

It’s easy to pick one ceiling light and hope it covers everything from reading to relaxing. Yet a fitting bright enough for close work can feel harsh when you want to unwind.

Most rooms feel better with ambient light for general fill and task light for close work. Accent light is a handy extra for shelves or art. You don’t need every type in each corner.

Walk the room at night and note where shadows fall from the usual seats. Look for dark corners and bright spots that make you squint.

Living room and bedroom

These are rooms for rest and soft light. You’ll want general light that can drop down low in the evening.

In the living room, pair a central ceiling light or floor lamp with a reading lamp near the chair or sofa. A movable arm lets you pull light close for books and push it back for films. In an open plan, use a separate floor lamp or table lamp to mark the sitting zone as a distinct place to sit and talk. You can dim it for watching films.

Bedrooms work the same way. Keep the overhead soft and put task light by the bed for reading. Wall sconces free up the nightstand, but check their position from the bed so the bulb isn’t shining straight into your eyes. Put them on separate switches so you can use one without the other.

Light colour is personal preference. Many of us like a warm white around 2700K for living rooms and bedrooms because it feels calm at night. If warm light feels too yellow, try something a touch cooler and live with it for a few evenings before deciding.

Match fixtures to the plan

Pick function first and looks second. A pretty pendant won’t help if it leaves the work surface dark.

Once you know what each room needs, you can look through lustria.com for fixtures that fit the scale and finish of your home. Filter by room or type, like ceiling lights and wall lights, and compare a few options side by side. Small differences in shade shape and material change how much light spills down and out to the walls.

Check size alongside style. A small pendant may not spread light across a long table, while an oversized shade in a low hallway can obstruct sightlines. A cardboard template of the shade can help you judge its proportions before buying.

Kitchen and dining room

Kitchens need clear light where knives and heat are involved. You’ll still want it to feel pleasant when people gather around.

Start with even general light across the ceiling so you don’t work in your own shadow. Then add focused light over counters and the cooker. Under-cabinet strips put light right where you chop and read recipes. Pendants over an island can add both task light and a visual anchor. Hang them high enough to see under and low enough to light the surface.

Check the pack for lumens, not watts. Watts tell you power draw. Lumens tell you brightness. LEDs give plenty of light with low heat and last a long time, so there’s no need to judge by old watt numbers.

Dining is different. You want faces lit without harsh downlight that creates deep shadows. A central pendant with a dimmer lets you go bright for homework and low for dinner. Check that the bulb or integrated fitting is dimmable and compatible with your chosen control; not every LED works with every dimmer. If your table doubles as a desk, keep a portable lamp handy so you can move task light away when guests come.

Colour accuracy matters where food is involved. A high CRI bulb shows colours in a truer way, which helps with fresh produce and meat prep. You don’t need to memorise numbers. Just look for high CRI noted on the pack for kitchen and closet bulbs.

Bathroom and hallway

In bathrooms, consider mirror lighting separately from the light you need to move around safely.

An overhead light can cast shadows across your face. Lights on either side of the mirror can give more even illumination for shaving and makeup. Bathroom fixtures must suit their position and exposure to water; a general damp-use label isn’t enough to establish suitability everywhere. Ask a qualified electrician about the appropriate protection rating and local requirements before buying fittings or planning wired alterations.

Hallways need light to guide you through. A row of recessed lights or wall sconces for an even wash beats one glaring bulkhead. Smart bulbs can help because you can schedule low light overnight.

For a work corner, don’t chase strict rules about cool white. Some people like cooler light for focus and others find it flat and tiring through the day. Test a bulb with adjustable colour and see what keeps you alert without strain. A desk lamp with shielding that keeps the source out of your eyes will do more for comfort than any Kelvin number.

Good home lighting doesn’t have to be perfect on day one. Swap one layer at a time, live with it, and adjust. You’ll end up with rooms that work for mornings and nights without much fuss.
